1.Brief introduction

In the summer of 2024, I had the honor to participate in the Curriculum and Laboratory Training Program of The Asian Campus-Korean Institute of Science and Technology (Summer KAIST CAMPUS Asia Research-oriented Program). The program received students from Asian universities such as Tsinghua University and Tokyo University of Technology. I not only devoted myself to scientific research in this summer research, but also deeply experienced the culture and local customs of South Korea.

When I first arrived, I was still vaguely worried about whether I could get in quickly. However, when I chatted with the lab tutor Pro.Lim and planned my summer research trip, I found that the teacher was very kind and considerate. The seniors in the lab also took good care of me and helped me solve the problems I encountered in my daily life and scientific research. The tutor also knows a little about China. On the wall of his office hung a calligraphy work of "Heaven Beyond", he said to remind himself that Science has constantly expanded new fields waiting for generations of science to be explored and carry forward the future. Although I come from different cultural backgrounds and have different university learning backgrounds, Pro.Lim really impressed me with my attitude towards science, which also indicates that my trip will be fruitful.

2. scientific research experience

In the summer research project of KAIST, my main task is to verify the effect of IRAlus DNA sequence on gene expression. To accomplish this task, my study involves not only a specific wet experimental manipulation in the laboratory, but also a semi-quantitative analysis of the fluorescence microscopy result maps.

One of the most important reasons for me to participate in this summer research project is that I can complete my own exploration of neurobiology under the background of other countries. On campus, I also focused on the effects of some proteins on neurological diseases in the laboratory. However, in KAIST, I can understand the occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases from the perspective of long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs), broaden my vision, and make myself have different basic experimental capabilities. Therefore, I really hope to use this opportunity of summer research to master some relevant subject knowledge and scientific research methods abroad. Pro.Lim Is a laboratory under molecular neurobiology, focusing on lncRNAs neat1, but also on how the control of genes, gene products and related molecules affects the behavior and physiology of animals, and how the dysfunction of related molecules leads to the development of neurological diseases. Due to the relatively small research foundation in this field, I also spent a lot of time to learn relevant basic knowledge and background articles in the early stage, and in this process, I also got a lot of help from professors and classmates in the group. Although the time was very limited, we finally successfully mastered the FISH experiment and analyzed the fluorescence results, which also laid a foundation for further research.

Pro.Lim The overall atmosphere of the research group is quite happy, and everyone completes the experiment orderly and slowly, and the laboratory will not force everyone to sit on duty or punch in. Each student attended it together except on Monday.

3. South Korea life

Korea, a beautiful country that combines tradition and modernity, is world-famous for its unique culture, charming scenery and cuisine, and is located in the Korean Peninsula of East Asia, integrating rich natural landscapes and deep historical culture. The country has four distinct seasons, from Baitou Mountain in the north to Jeju Island in the south, where mountains and seas blend with their own features. Traditional Korean culture is deeply influenced by Confucianism, and festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival are full of family reunions and traditional activities. Korean cuisine is known for its rich flavors, with dishes such as kimchi, bibimbap and roast meat beloved. Modern Korea is full of vitality, with Seoul is a globalized metropolis, showcasing the frontiers of technology and fashion. Korean pop culture, such as K-pop and Korean dramas, is influential around the world. Social customs value etiquette and respect, especially in front of the elders and superiors. Overall, South Korea attracts tourists from all over the world with its unique natural scenery, rich cultural tradition and modern lifestyle.

KAIST day-to-day

My study and life experience at the Korea National Academy of Science and Technology (KAIST) is a valuable time for me full of challenges and growth. The academic atmosphere here is very strong, and the high level of professors and researchers makes me feel the pulse of cutting-edge technology both in the class and in the laboratory. In the face of complex topics, I keep learning and improving my skills, and every breakthrough makes me deeply successful. In the laboratory, I worked closely with students from different backgrounds, which not only improved my scientific research ability, but also enabled me to experience the fun of teamwork. In terms of life, I have actively integrated into diversified cultural exchanges, adapted to the new environment and broadened my international vision.

4.Summary and Outlook

In the one-month summer study of KAIST, I not only gained an understanding in scientific research, but also deepened my understanding of South Korea and its development of science and technology through cultural experience, and also realized the importance of cross-cultural exchanges and international cooperation.

One month was fleeting, and I treasured this valuable overseas learning experience: I was able to come out of different backgrounds, look at the problems I was interested in from a new perspective, and learn new research methods in a new environment. I gained the help and advice of the professor, got the goodwill and support of the same door, and gained more confidence and strength. I believe that this experience will become a valuable wealth on my way forward, which will encourage me to continue to forge ahead in my future study and life.
